Let's face it. The blog-o-sphere is a very crowded space. Which leaves us with the challenge of getting attention and keeping it once you have it. Well, how do we do that?
We have to, Be Consistently Interesting.
Let's talk about that for a second.
Just Be Yourself:
Isn't "consistently interesting" best achieved when you focus on nothing more than just being who you really are? You know, being "you!" It's too difficult trying to be something you're not. We've all been there at some point or other and you have to admit, it's hard work indeed.
Urban Monk talks about "The Power of Being Yourself." The fact that each and every one of us is unique in our own light. When we speak from a place of sincerity, we let that unique light shine through. In blogging it's called passion in writing. It's so much easier to write and connect with people when it comes from a place of sincerity; an end only accompllshed through the power of being yourself.
Share Your Passion:
The best presentations (and blogs are most certainly that, presentations of ourselves and the messages we wish to convey)... The ones that truly captivate us and leave us wanting for more...are the one's that Valeria Maltoni says contain "the secret sauce."
"the one ingredient that will make your presentation spark is the joy you put into it." -- Valeria Maltoni, Conversation Agent
That joy stems from passion. And passion my dear friends is something you can never really fake.
Once you do get someone's attention and a two-way dialogue ensues, the only thing left to do is to continue to be consistently interesting by doing as Florence Scovel Shinn says:
"Be interested, and others will find you interesting."
[Thank you Mousewords for the quote.]

You're right about being yourself. All of my favorite blogs have a distinct personality behind them. Not every post has to be blazing with that personality, but it should underlie everything and be highlighted pretty regularly.
That's something that's kinda nice about reading blogs. The "fakers" eventually fade away, since it's hard to keep up something you don't really care about.

Hi Sara:
See... It's that "distinct personality" that keeps you going back in the first place.
And you're right...it doesn't have to be blazing. But it should be present. I often find that when a blog lacks a "distinct personality" I quickly build disinterest and my chances of returning are slim to none.

This is a great analysis. I agree, in order for a blog to perform well, whatever it is that is unique inside you, must be drawn to the surface. That being said - it should be done strategically as well. Allowing your passion to shine through + sound strategy creates a winning combination.
By the way, my secret sauce is soy.

Bamboo Forest: Ha! Soy huh? Have you ever had the Matcha Green Tea shot w/soy from Jamba Juice? It's the best!
Anyway, you summed it up perfectly:
"Allowing your passion to shine through + sound strategy creates a winning combination."
Write from a place of sincerity and the uniqueness that is you will naturally spill out.
Welcome to the blog. See you around...

i like the "be yourself" part of blogging. it's so much easier to blog when you don't have to pretend to be something you are not.

@Natural: Oh but it is, isn't it? Speaking of which I like the short "About" piece you have on your sidebar. It tells people "exactly" what you're about...
